Cher first became involved with Komen in 1997 in Pittsburgh, PA. After moving to Orlando in 2005, she joined the race team and was subsequently elected to the board in 2007.
As a participant in the 3 day, 60 mile walk in Tampa, FL in 2008, Cher was part of a team that raised over $20,000 for the cause. Her own zest for life and natural inclination to fight for others increases the likelihood of a Cher-sighting at almost any event that will directly benefit the women and men whose lives are touched by breast cancer. One such event was the 500 mile motorcycle ride in September 2010, which she completed in 8 hours. The event was organized by a group of women known as the ‘Ribbon Riders’ who raise money to assist breast cancer patients. Caring about the well-being of others is definitely a family affair as it isn’t uncommon for Cher’s grandchildren to serve on the race committee or show up to volunteer before dawn on race day. “My goal and Komen's are tightly tied in seeing an end to this disease in my lifetime.”
